چکیده

We present the results of new XMM observations of FR-I and FR-II radio galaxies that show the importance of jet/environment interactions for both radiosource structure and the properties of the surrounding gas. The FR-I observations reveal that the distribution of hot gas determines the radio-lobe morphology, and provide evidence that the subsonic expansion of the lobes heats the surrounding gas. The FR-II observations show that the sources are at equipartition and in pressure balance with their surroundings. Finally, we present an analysis of a sample of elliptical-dominated groups, showing that radio-source heating is common.

On the Bl Lacertae Objects/radio Quasars and the Fri/ii Dichotomy

In the frame of unification schemes for radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs), FR I radio galaxies are believed to be BL Lacertae (BL Lac) objects with the relativistic jet misaligned to our line of sight, and FR II radio galaxies correspond to misaligned radio quasars. The Ledlow-Owen dividing line for FR I/FR II dichotomy in the optical absolute magnitude of host galaxy–radio luminosity (M...

The dividing line between FR I and FR II radio–galaxies

In the radio – host galaxy optical luminosity plane FR I and FR II radio–galaxies are clearly divided. Since the optical luminosity of an elliptical galaxy is an indication of the mass of its central black hole, we propose that the FR I–FR II dividing luminosity is a function of the mass of the black hole powering the active nucleus. Furthermore, as the radio power gives an estimate of the tota...

Unified schemes for active galaxies: a clue from the missing Fanaroff-Riley type I quasar population

We link the lack of FR I type structure among quasars to the void of radio loud quasars below a critical disk luminosity of ∼ 10 erg/sec in the PG sample. We argue that the opening angle of the obscuring torus in radio loud quasars depends on the power of the central engine, approaching the jet’s beaming angle near the FR I/FR II break. Consequently, low power radio quasars would either be clas...

No evidence for a different accretion mode for all 3CR FR I radio galaxies

We have analyzed the optical and radio properties of a sample of 3CR FR I radio galaxies which have Hubble Space Telescope imaging capable of detecting optical cores. The jet powers of the FR I radio galaxies are estimated from their low-frequency radio luminosities, and the optical core luminosity is taken as an upper limit on the emission from any unobscured accretion disc. We argue that if t...

We link the lack of FR I type structure among quasars to the void of radio loud quasars below a critical disk luminosity of 10 46 erg/sec in the PG sample. We argue that the opening angle of the obscuring torus in radio loud quasars depends on the power of the central engine, approaching the jet's beaming angle near the FRI/FR II break. Consequently, low power radio quasars would either be clas...
